The BeachFlyer electric motor can be engaged in two ways, on demand with the throttle or as you need it through pedal assist. By pushing the thumb throttle on the right handle grip the electric motor will engage and the BeachFlyer will accelerate from a dead stop and will maintain a cruising speed without pedaling.
Pedal-assist is when the electric motor engages automatically. Once you start pedaling, a torque sensor picks up the crank movement and electric power from the motor integrates seamlessly while you ride. Once you use the brakes or quit pedaling, the electric power is deactivated and you will need to pedal again to reactivate pedal-assist.
The BeachFlyer can reach a speed of 20 MPH without pedaling using the throttle. It is possible to increase the speed even further by shifting the derailleur to the highest gear and pedaling hard.

To prolong the life of the lithium battery there are a few best practices:
- First, make sure the battery is fully charged when you get a new BeachFlyer.
- Second, after heavily discharging the lithium battery make sure it is charged back to full as soon as possible. Try not to store the lithium battery if the state of charge is less than 50%.
- Third, if you can help it do not completely discharge the battery, keep it at least 20% state of charge or higher.
Lastly, avoid extreme hot and cold temperatures. Recommended storage temperatures are 32F-77F.
